Hundreds of students today held a rally in the city demanding resumption of classes which has been suspended following the cease work strike sponsored by the Federation of Elementary School to College Teachers Association.
A memorandum submitted to the State Governor by the students today demanded an end to the deadlock by November 26 failing which a massive agitation will be launched by them from the next day.
The Government should be responsible for any eventuality, it stated.
The rally began from TG Hr Sec School at around 12 noon and passed through Keisampat, Wahengbam Leikai, Shamu Makhong, BT Road and headed for Raj Bhavan.
The rallyists carried placards written "both the Government and the teachers forget their responsibilities", "no politics to students", "don't disturb students' careers" and "save our future".
Students of Ram Lal Paul Hr Sec School, CC Hr Sec School, Johnstone Hr Sec, TG Hr Sec, Ananda Hr Sec, Wangkhei Girls and Ibotonsana Hr Sec School took part in the rally.
Police obstructed the students in front of the Johnstone Hr Sec School.
An eleven member student team was allowed to proceed and meet the Governor.
However, the students could not meet the Governor as he had arrived from Delhi just then.
The Governor's secretary RK Angousana received the memorandum and assured the students that he would convey their demands to the Governor.
The students are likely to meet Marwah tomorrow.
In the memorandum, the Students lamented that their classes have been remaining cancelled since November 12 after the teachers resorted to strike and demanded resumption of regular classes from November 26.The teachers resorted to cease work strike against the Government decision to cut HRA and TA of the teachers.
The Manipur College Students' Union has appealed to the striking teachers of FECTA and Manipur Government to bring an early settlement to the impending impasse that has greatly affected the academic calendar of educational institutions.
The TG Hr Sec School Students Union has called a meeting of students of Government school at 11 am tomorrow at the school.
